Insurance becomes predictive and personal.
The European insurtech market is growing to €12 billion by 2026. Insurers deploying AI for claims automation, fraud detection and underwriting achieve 45% faster claims processing and 60% better fraud detection. The shift from reactive to predictive insurance management is the biggest transformation in the sector since digitalization.
What does AI mean for the insurance industry?
AI in insurance means using models trained on policy, claims and behavioural data to assess risk, settle claims and flag fraud. It changes both who handles a file and what the judgement looks at: routine cases are assessed by the model and only unusual or disputed ones reach an underwriter or claims handler, while the view becomes forward-looking, from expected loss and reserving to the risk that a customer leaves.
- Insurance AI spans underwriting, claims handling, fraud detection and customer intelligence, including cross-sell and retention.
- Where an automated decision carries significant consequences, such as declining a claim, the GDPR lets the customer ask for human intervention.

From weeks-long claims to minutes
How AI automates claims and detects fraud with unprecedented accuracy.
Straight-Through Processing
AI assesses standard claims automatically: from photo analysis of damage to policy verification and payout. 70% of simple claims are processed within minutes, without human intervention.
Fraud Network Analysis
Graph-based AI that identifies fraud networks by connecting claimants, garages, medical providers and patterns. Detects 3.5x more fraud than rule-based systems.
Predictive Loss Modelling
AI predicts expected loss per segment, region and season. Sets reserves more accurately and identifies emerging risks before they materialize.
Intelligent underwriting and client growth
How AI refines risk assessment and maximizes client value.
Dynamic Risk Assessment
AI underwriting that assesses risk in real time based on IoT data, behavioral patterns and external data sources. From static risk profiles to dynamic, personalized premiums. 35% better risk selection.
Product Recommendation Engine
AI that advises the optimal coverage per client based on risk profile, life stage and client value. Increases cross-sell conversion by 28% and improves customer satisfaction.
Retention Intelligence
Predictive models that forecast cancellation risk 90 days ahead. Automatic retention interventions — from personalized offers to proactive outreach — reduce churn by 40%.
From manual processes to autonomous insurance AI
Traditional insurance processes are labor-intensive. Agentic Insurance Systems automate routine decisions. W69 designs architectures where AI agents autonomously assess claims, detect fraud and personalize policies — 24/7.
Claims Intake Analysis
AI agents automatically analyze incoming claims: document verification, policy checks and initial risk assessment.
Fraud Screening
Real-time fraud screening of every claim against known patterns, networks and anomalies — before the claim enters processing.
Underwriting Decisioning
Automated acceptance decisions for standard risks within pre-defined parameters. Complex risks are escalated.
Portfolio Learning
Every claim outcome and risk decision refines the models. Your insurance operation becomes continuously more accurate.
Frequently asked questions about AI in insurance
Files where cover is unambiguous, the loss can be established from the evidence already submitted, no third party is involved and the fraud checks stay quiet. The threshold belongs to you, set per product line and per claim size, and the model places a file on one side of it rather than inventing the line itself. Anything beyond it goes to a handler together with what the model already gathered, so the review starts from evidence rather than from scratch.
Your claims history only describes risks you let in, so a model trained on it reproduces your current acceptance policy instead of testing it. Retaining declined applications documents that filter, but it does not close the gap: a policy that never ran has no loss outcome to learn from. Closing it takes reject inference, where the likely result of a refused risk is estimated statistically, or a bounded trial in which borderline applications are accepted deliberately and followed until claims emerge.
The ones your business already reports. On the claims side: cycle time, the share of files closed without a manual touch, reopened files and complaints. On the underwriting side: loss ratio and combined ratio per segment, observed over a period long enough for claims to emerge, since a young book always looks profitable. Read both against a control group still running the old route, otherwise seasonality and a shifting portfolio mix get credited to the model.
Which factors carried weight in that decision and how heavily, phrased so the customer can follow it. The file also has to let the decision be rebuilt afterwards: the data that went in, the model version that judged it, and when. That record serves the customer, your own complaints route, an ombudsman and a regulator asking to see the case. Where the consequences are significant, the GDPR also lets the customer ask for human intervention, so build the logging into the design.
It drifts away from the world it was built on. Fraud patterns change once perpetrators work out what you screen for, repair and care costs move with the market, and the mix of your portfolio shifts. Nothing fails visibly, the model simply becomes a little less right over time. The early signs sit at the edges: handlers overriding the score more often, more reopened files, acceptances an underwriter would have called differently. Schedule retraining and keep comparing the model's judgement with realised outcomes.
