Download Service Brief (PDF)When does AI-driven ad optimization work, and when does it not?
AI-driven ad optimization works once the system knows which outcome is commercially valuable and receives that signal reliably. Without that foundation, the model will optimize faithfully toward the wrong goal, and the reporting will still look convincing. What separates a good result from a costly one is the quality of your measurement, not the choice of platform or bidding strategy.
- The system decides within the goals, spending ceilings and exclusions you set; those boundaries are a commercial choice, not a technical setting.
- It does not work where conversions arrive late or incomplete, where every conversion is treated as equally valuable, or where targets change so often that the model never settles.
The AI advertising revolution
Global digital ad spend will reach €740B in 2025, yet 62% of that budget is wasted on underperforming campaigns. AI-powered bidding and creative optimization are closing this gap — delivering dramatically better returns for every advertising euro.

Frequently asked questions about performance and paid AI
Usually because it has been aimed at the wrong objective. Ask a system for leads and it will deliver leads, including the ones your sales team would never accept. The model does exactly what it was told; the instruction was wrong. A second cause is a conversion signal that arrives late or incomplete, which teaches the system to reward the wrong impressions. Hands-on management tends to hide both problems, because a person corrects course on judgment along the way. Automation does not: it makes the error visible and executes it consistently.
Start with the definition of a conversion, so that every part of the business counts the same event. Attach a value to it, because without one the system will chase volume instead of revenue. Then make sure the signal reaches your advertising accounts completely and promptly, including conversions that only close later in a longer sales cycle. Break any link in that chain and the output becomes unreliable while still looking persuasive. At that point, repairing measurement returns more than switching automation on.
Not from the advertising platform's own reporting alone, because it is grading its own work. Set those figures against what your CRM or order data shows for the same period. The strongest test is an incrementality experiment: treat part of the market or part of the budget differently on purpose and measure the gap. Alongside that, manage to cost per qualified lead rather than cost per click, and judge the result over a period long enough to filter out seasonality and chance. Short windows mostly measure noise.
More room than most teams are comfortable giving it. Any material change to budget, target or campaign structure opens a fresh learning phase in which the model has to recalibrate its estimates, so adjusting something every day keeps it permanently in that phase. Agree in advance which deviation justifies an intervention and what counts as ordinary variation, and change one thing at a time so the effect stays attributable. Real faults, such as conversion tracking dropping out, still call for immediate action.
You do. The system chooses within the frame you set: spending ceilings, exclusions, audiences you would rather not approach, and the brand rules every ad has to meet. Those are commercial and editorial decisions rather than technical settings. Define as well which decisions may run automatically and which escalate to a person, and keep a record of what changed and why. Without that record you cannot explain after the fact why the budget moved where it did, and that is the first question any review will ask.
